Together Helping Seniors arose from the collaborative experiences of many caring people who were stressed and aggravated with today’s solutions, mainly crisis management. Gabriela Sauder in her geriatric practice realized the overwhelming unfulfilled needs in people of retirement age. Their medical, financial, legal, social and psychological welfare simply were not well addressed and lacked a coherent framework. She wanted to help our senior parents live the way they would like to live on their own terms as they journey through their old age!
What is going on in the United States with the baby boom generation is a magnification of what she experiences everyday at her office. Children have parents who help them navigate their years from infancy, through childhood, into adolescents and ending in adulthood. But when the parents grow old, and face the inevitable decline, (Yes, it will happen and maybe sooner than you think) who do they lean on to navigate the various systems that they encounter in the golden years? Their children, not really for what do they know about retirement- they are in midlife – which the seniors already experienced. Most children are super busy with work and family. At the same time they do not know what to do when their parents cannot manage for themselves. They become stressed and aggravated. Moreover, the older parents of course do not want to be a burden on their adult children and relatives.
Who is your guide? Your senior friends may help; but what is their expertise and do they know for sure all the ins and outs with respect to the medical, financial, legal, social, and psychological dimensions of growing old? Heaven forbid but it could amount to the proverbial phrase of the blind leading the blind.
Again, who is looking out for you? According to Dr. Sauder it’s YOU for the most part. And wouldn’t you like to have a reliable advocate. Children have parents, but what about you? Who is your trusted guide or wise consultant?
